Overview

Setting off on a Zambian safari offers a raw, unfiltered encounter with Africa, where vast wilderness areas and low-impact tourism create space for truly immersive wildlife experiences. In the Zambezi National Park, we’ll stay in a secluded bush retreat where comfort meets untamed nature. Here, elephants move freely through the landscape, big cats patrol the riverine forests, and herds of giraffes, zebras, and antelopes drift across open plains in scenes that feel completely untouched by time. From the banks of the Zambezi River, we continue into Livingstone, the historic gateway to Victoria Falls - known locally as “The Smoke That Thunders.” We’ll explore the falls from the Zambian side, getting close enough to feel the spray on our skin as we walk to dramatic viewpoints like the Knife-Edge Bridge. Our journey also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, a visit to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in search of white rhino, and a nostalgic five-course journey aboard a vintage train to Victoria Falls Bridge. We then continue into Botswana’s Chobe National Park, home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations, before venturing deeper into the Lower Zambezi, a vast, wild floodplain where game drives reveal a constantly shifting tapestry of wildlife along the river’s edge. If you're ready for a trip filled with connection, awe, and experiences you’ll talk about for years to come, we’d love to have you join us. Let’s make these memories together.

Day 4: Tuesday, May 25, 2027

After one last morning game drive through Zambezi, we'll say farewell to Chamabondo and head into Victoria Falls for some souvenir shopping. We'll stop at the Elephant Walk Shopping & Artist Village to peruse their beautiful collection of local crafts.

Continuing across the border into Livingstone, we'll each have a packed lunch to savor along the way. After about 30 minutes, we'll arrive at the lush David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa, our peaceful riverside retreat that will be home for the next few nights.

As the heat of the day softens, the group will gather and head out onto the Zambezi River for a sunset cruise. At this hour before the sun sets, the river is quietly humming—hippos surfacing in the shallows, birds skimming low across the water, and the distant murmur of the bush settling into evening. With a drink in hand and dinner served on board, it’s an easy, grounding introduction to Zambia’s slower tempo.

Livingstone - Victoria Falls & Royal Livingstone Express

Day 5: Wednesday, May 26, 2027

Begin the day slowly with breakfast at the lodge, before we set out to explore Victoria Falls, one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Africa. Stretching across the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, the falls offer a constantly shifting perspective, from wide, thundering cascades to more intimate vantage points where we can feel their full force.

For the adventurous, we can walk along the Knife-Edge Bridge, where the energy of the falls is unmistakable. The air is thick with mist, rising in soft plumes that catch the light and form fleeting rainbows as we stand over 300 feet above the Zambezi River.

Later, we'll set out on a game drive in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, one of Zambia's smaller parks but a special one. Here, we'll be accompanied by an expert guide as we move through the bush, tracking endangered white rhinos and other wildlife at a gentle pace. Along the way, we'll pause for a picnic lunch and gain a deeper understanding of the surrounding ecosystem from our guides.

Later this evening, we'll step aboard the elegant Royal Livingstone Express for an unforgettable journey celebrating the golden age of rail travel. As our beautifully restored vintage train winds through the Zambian countryside toward the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge, we'll indulge in a five-star gourmet dinner paired with exceptional wines.

Day 6: Thursday, May 27, 2027

We'll begin the day with an early breakfast before meeting in the lobby for our journey across the border into Botswana and the world-famous Chobe National Park. After completing the border formalities, we'll pause for coffee and a light snack before our adventure begins.

Our morning starts on a boat on the magnificent Chobe River, where Africa's largest elephant herds gather along the water's edge in the cool morning light. As we cruise quietly through these wildlife-rich waters, we'll have exceptional opportunities to spot elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, and an incredible variety of birdlife.

After our river safari, we'll enjoy lunch at Coffee Buzz, where we'll sample regional specialties and hearty cuisine before heading into Chobe National Park for an afternoon game drive.

Renowned for its extraordinary wildlife density, the park offers the chance to encounter elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, numerous antelope species, and much more as we explore its diverse landscapes alongside our expert guide.

Livingstone - Baobuyu Learning Center & Elephant Cafe

Day 7: Friday, May 28, 2027

The morning starts with a relaxed breakfast before we make our way to the Baobuyu Learning Center. Here, we'll spend time understanding the work being done to provide free education and meaningful support within the local community. It’s a grounded, human experience that offers us a deeper sense of connection to this place and its people. We’ll also be introduced to a women’s needlework initiative, where practical skills are creating pathways to independence and long-term opportunity.

In the afternoon, our focus shifts back to the wild as we arrive at The Elephant Café, set along the banks of the Zambezi River. We'll be welcomed immediately into the presence of a rescued herd of elephants, with the chance to observe them up close and see their intelligence and gentle nature firsthand. The encounter is thoughtfully guided, allowing us to learn about their stories and the conservation efforts behind their care.

As the elephants wander back into the bush, we'll sit down for an unhurried meal overlooking the river. The cuisine is inventive yet rooted in traditional methods and flavors, drawing on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and incorporating wild edibles in subtle, creative ways.

Lower Zambezi National Park

Post-Trip Extension - Day 1: Saturday, May 29, 2027

Welcome to Baines River Camp, our base for the next few nights. Set along the banks of the Zambezi River and positioned near Lower Zambezi National Park, the camp embodies the intersection of indulgence and wilderness.

There’s time to settle in and freshen up before we head out for a sunset game drive, our first introduction to this new ecosystem. As the light softens, we'll watch for movement in the bush, spotting elephant, zebra, and, with luck, the more elusive predators that move through this landscape, such as lions and leopards.

Returning to camp for dinner, we'll gather over a relaxed meal at Baines' Restaurant before retreating for the night. After a full day of travel and transition, it’s a quiet landing into our new setting, with the sounds of the river close by as we rest for what lies ahead.

Post-Trip Extension - Day 2: Sunday, May 30, 2027

Enjoy the crisp morning air in the park with a quick breakfast before we start on today’s adventures.

We'll head out on an early birding game drive. Whether you're already a hardcore bird enthusiast or have never thought about birding before, your first safari to the Lower Zambezi will ensure that birds will win over your heart. We'll stop for tea and biscuits along the way.

After a buffet lunch at the lodge, we'll enjoy some free time around the camp. If the river is low, sit back and relax on the riverbanks with your toes in the sand as the water flows by.

In the afternoon, we'll glide along the Zambezi River, looking out for wildlife at the water’s edge. Expect to see the Big Four, though rhino populations are rare due to poaching. Lions, hyenas, wild dogs, and leopards are the primary predators in this area. We might also spot leopards among the many large trees where they like to hang out, despite their general elusiveness.

This evening, we'll toast to our amazing safari experience with drinks at sunset, followed by dinner.

Unspoiled wilderness and untamed riverfronts in Africa’s heart

Zambia, Zimbabwe & Botswana

Zambia is defined by vast, unspoiled wilderness, where wide river valleys, open savannahs, and dense woodland stretch uninterrupted across the landscape. The Zambezi River cuts through this terrain, shaping lush floodplains and drawing wildlife to its banks. Just across the border, Zimbabwe offers a dramatic counterpart, home to the thundering Victoria Falls, where immense curtains of water plunge into a basalt gorge in one of the world’s most powerful natural spectacles. Botswana rounds out this adventure, championing wildlife conservation and offering plenty of opportunities to see animals roaming in their natural sanctuaries.

FAQs

The trip starts in Livingstone, Zambia. Our recommended arrival airport would be Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) in Livingstone, Zambia. Our guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to town.

An alternative option would be the Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe, which may be more cost-effective.

The trip ends in Lusaka if you join the post-trip extension. You can fly directly from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) back home or arrange for a flight from there back to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) or Livingstone (LVI) at your own cost.

The trip officially starts mid-afternoon, May 22nd, but if you are traveling across an ocean to get to Zambia, consider arriving a day early so you have time to relax and adjust to the local time zone. If you do decide to arrive early, you can book your pre-trip night directly on our website.

All US and Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter Zambia. Please ensure you have a passport with at least 6 months' validity remaining and empty pages for entry and exit stamps.

However, a visa is needed if you fly into Zimbabwe. Obtain the KAZA UNIVISA: For travelers visiting both Zambia and Zimbabwe, the KAZA UNIVISA is available for US $50. This visa allows multiple entries into both countries over 30 days and can be obtained upon arrival.

As for vaccines, it is recommended that you address the following health risks in Zambia: cholera, hepatitis A&B, rabies, typhoid, and malaria pills.

Both travel insurance and medical insurance are required. Please see our travel insurance page for more information.

The domestic airline we will be using in Zambia requires checked luggage to weigh no more than 15 kg (33 lb) and carry-on bags to weigh no more than 5 kg (11 lb). All of your bags will be weighed before boarding the plane. There will be a fee if your bags exceed the weight limit. So, pack smartly as you will want to buy souvenirs.

May is the start of Zambia's "winter". There’s hardly any rain, and the humidity remains low. The skies are a deep cobalt blue, with hot days and cool nights. Expect highs in the high 70°Fs and lows in the mid 50°Fs.

Think LAYERS! The mornings will be chilly during the morning game drives and the afternoons will be warm. Lightweight clothes in neutral colors to ward off the sun. All of our hotels have pools, so don't forget your bathing suits to lounge after lunch.

We'll have a Zoom call about 8 weeks before the trip starts to discuss important logistics and give you packing guidance. In the meantime, here is a great website with packing lists and tips to reference.

We require that everyone traveling with Girls' Guide be able to comfortably walk 3–5 miles per day unassisted, and without difficulty, can navigate stairs, uneven streets or paths, and occasional steep terrain. Most of our trips require this level of physical mobility and fitness, especially when visiting historic towns and landmarks where vehicle access is limited and walking often offers the best experience.

Additionally, some of the 4 and 5-star boutique or historic hotels we stay in do not have elevators and may require climbing stairs to get to your room or access other facilities in the hotel.

Visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to see answers to most other questions about traveling with Girls' Guide to the World.
