Overview

Setting off on a Zambian safari offers an authentic wildlife experience, known for its remote, less commercialized environments. It’s one of Africa’s premier destinations to experience nature in its raw form, boasting abundant wildlife and stunning landscapes. Zambia pioneered walking safaris; nothing beats feeling Africa under your feet! Zambia shares the famous Victoria Falls with its neighbor, Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls may not be the highest falls on the planet, but they are the widest and deserve their status as one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. On this trip, we'll experience them from both sides! We will spend three nights in Livingstone, the home of Victoria Falls, or as the locals call it, "Mosi oa Tunya" or “The Smoke that Thunders.” Next, we visit Lower Zambezi National Park, covering over 4,000 sq km along the northwest bank of the Zambezi River. It's an untouched sanctuary with floodplains offering spectacular game drives that reveal a vibrant world with birds, wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo. If you're ready for a trip filled with connection, awe, and experiences you’ll talk about for years to come, we’d love to have you join us. Let’s make these memories together.

Livingstone - Victoria Falls & Rhino Walking Safari

Day 2: Tuesday, May 26, 2026

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge before our tour of Victoria Falls. The falls stretch across the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, offering distinct and equally mesmerizing experiences from both sides.

For those feeling adventurous, walk along the Knife-Edge Bridge, and feel the power of the falls. The mist creates rainbows that add to the vibrant, magical atmosphere.

After touring the spectacular falls, we'll head out on a Rhino Walking Safari, an activity unique to this area. We'll join a guide and Zambia Wildlife Authority escort who will lead us through he bush in search of White Rhinos and other big game. Refreshments will be served halfway through, and our guide will educate us about the surrounding wildlife along the way.

Take some time to rest and refresh after the walking safari. We'll meet in the hotel lobby at 5 pm and transfer to our dinner spot for the night. Chef Sungani is located right within the chef's private residence, and is a renowned Zambian restaurant serving up seasonal, locally sourced dishes.

Zimbabwe - Historic Bridge & Dusty Road

Day 3: Wednesday, May 27, 2026

After breakfast, we're off to Zimbabwe for the day! We'll learn all about the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, an engineering masterpiece of its time, built over 100 years ago. Our guide will regale us with stories of how this iconic bridge was built across the Zambezi River to connect Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Next up is the Dusty Road township experience. Here, we'll step into a welcoming and thriving local community and experience its vibrancy. Local vendors sell their wares as enticing smells from the charcoal fires waft through the air. We'll be surrounded by vibrant, innovative regional works infused with a strong dose of African humor and creativity.

While we wander Dusty Road, we'll discover the Zimbabwean way of cooking food over open fires and in cast-iron pots and ovens. This experience offers us an authentic, wholesome, and tasty food experience.

Sarah, a local restaurant owner, is hugely concerned about the welfare of women, female empowerment, and Zimbabwean cultural awareness. We'll take our time to enjoy a nice meal at her place.

We'll return to the hotel to freshen up and maybe go for a swim before indulging in an afternoon high tea at the Royal Livingstone. Complete with luxury loose-leaf teas from around the world, a traditional selection of sandwiches, patisserie creations, and scones with preserves, this is a real treat to round out the day.

The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy. If you need recommendations for light dinner spots, your guide will be happy to point you in the right direction.

We'll also learn about a women's needlework project that empowers local women with employable skills.

Later in the afternoon, we'll head to the Elephant Cafe. The members of a magnificent herd of rescued elephants are waiting for a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with you.

Experience an unforgettable close encounter with these gentle giants and a hosted informative viewing of the herd around the venue's vicinity. Once the herd retires to forage in the bush, we'll head for the cafe overlooking the Zambezi River for a wonderful dining experience.

Day 5: Friday, May 29, 2026

After breakfast this morning, we'll head to WayiWayi Art Studio and Gallery to admire local artists who are dedicated to empowering other artists in Zambia.

Mid-morning, we'll take a flight to Lower Zambezi National Park via Lusaka. The flight between Livingstone and Lusaka will serve a snack. Should you need another snack, a lovely little shop at the Lusaka departure lounge serves light meals to passengers.

Our guide will meet us once we touch down at the Royal Airstrip and take us to the lodge to freshen up before dinner. Our home for the next few days is the Baines River Camp. Set upon the banks of the mighty Zambezi, nestled ideally near the Lower Zambezi National Park and opposite Mana Pools.

To get a proper introduction to the area, we'll go on a sunset game drive and look out for local wildlife, including lions, leopards, rhinos, and zebras.

We'll enjoy dinner at the Baines' Restaurant, and then retire for the day, resting after a day of travel to our new basecamp.

Day 6: Saturday, May 30, 2026

Enjoy the crisp morning air in the park with a quick breakfast before we start on today’s adventures.

We'll head out on an early birding game drive. Whether you're already a hardcore bird enthusiast or have never thought about birding before, your first safari to the Lower Zambezi will ensure that birds will win over your heart. We'll stop for tea and biscuits along the way.

After a buffet lunch at the lodge, we'll enjoy some free time around the camp. If the river is low, sit back and relax on the riverbanks with your toes in the sand as the water flows by.

In the afternoon, we'll glide along the Zambezi River, looking out for wildlife at the water’s edge. Expect to see the Big Four, although rhino populations are rare because of poaching. Lions, hyenas, wild dogs, and leopards are the primary predators in this area. Leopards tend to be more visible in the many large trees where they like to hide, despite being somewhat elusive.

This evening, we'll toast our amazing safari experience with drinks at sunset and dinner.

FAQs

The trip starts in Livingstone, Zambia. Our recommended arrival airport would be Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) in Livingstone, Zambia. Our guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to town.

An alternative option would be the Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe, which may be more cost-effective.

The trip ends in Lusaka, whether or not you join the post-trip extension. You can fly directly from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) back home or arrange for a flight from there back to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) or Livingstone (LVI) at your own cost.

The trip officially starts mid-afternoon, May 25th, but if you are traveling across an ocean to get to Zambia, consider arriving a day early so you have time to relax and adjust to the local time zone. If you do decide to arrive early, you can book your pre-trip night directly on our website.

All US and Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter Zambia. Please ensure you have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining.

However, a visa is needed if you fly into Zimbabwe. Obtain the KAZA UNIVISA: For travelers visiting both Zambia and Zimbabwe, the KAZA UNIVISA is available for US $50. This visa allows multiple entries into both countries over 30 days and can be obtained upon arrival.

As for vaccines, it is recommended that you address the following health risks in Zambia: cholera, hepatitis A&B, rabies, typhoid, and malaria pills.

Both travel insurance and medical insurance are required. Please see our travel insurance page for more information.

The domestic carrier we will be using in Zambia requires checked luggage to weigh no more than 15 kg (33 lb) and carry-on bags to weigh no more than 5 kg (11 lb). All of your bags will be weighed before boarding the plane. There will be a fee if your bags exceed the weight limit. So, pack smartly as you will want to buy souvenirs.

In winter, which is when we will be visiting, there’s hardly any rain and humidity is low. The skies are cobalt blue, the days are hot, and the nights are cool. Expect highs in the high 70°Fs and lows in the mid 50°Fs.

Think LAYERS! The mornings will be chilly during the morning game drives and the afternoons will be warm. Lightweight clothes in neutral colors to ward off the sun. All of our hotels have pools, so don't forget your bathing suits to lounge after lunch.

We'll have a Zoom call about 8 weeks before the trip starts to discuss important logistics and give you packing guidance. In the meantime, here is a great website with packing lists and tips to reference.

We require that everyone traveling with Girls' Guide be able to comfortably walk 3–5 miles per day unassisted, and without difficulty, can navigate stairs, uneven streets or paths, and occasional steep terrain. Most of our trips require this level of physical mobility and fitness, especially when visiting historic towns and landmarks where vehicle access is limited and walking often offers the best experience.

Additionally, some of the 4 and 5-star boutique or historic hotels we stay in do not have elevators and may require climbing stairs to get to your room or access other facilities in the hotel.

Visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to see answers to most other questions about traveling with Girls' Guide to the World.
