The Wild Heart of South Africa

Arrive at Cape Town International Airport, where our VIP Meet & Greet representative will welcome you to South Africa. After a smooth arrival through customs, settle into a private transfer to The Winchester Boutique Hotel, an elegant historic retreat on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, where graceful architecture and ocean breezes set the tone for the days ahead. 

Once you're all checked in, take some time to unwind in your beautiful room, stretch your legs along the nearby promenade, or simply relax after a day of travel.

This evening, we’ll gather for our first taste of Cape Town at Shoreditch, our hotel's lively restaurant known for its contemporary take on South African flavors and welcoming atmosphere.

It’s an easy, celebratory beginning to our South African escape—and there’s something especially lovely about knowing that this is only the first evening of a trip filled with beautiful places, exceptional food, and unforgettable experiences.

We’ll wake to our first full morning in Cape Town with breakfast before setting out bright and early for our day of discovery on the Cape Peninsula. 

We’ll begin with fresh-roasted coffee and breakfast bites at Olympia Café, a well-loved Kalk Bay eatery, before visiting Tari Designs to see how women are finding empowerment and opportunity through creativity and design. 

From there, we’ll take a conservation walk near Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, learning about the remarkable coastal ecosystem and the ongoing efforts to protect the area’s iconic African penguins.

For our midday meal, we’ll sit down for a picnic surrounded by the dramatic beauty of the Cape Peninsula—a lovely chance to slow down, savor the scenery, and enjoy lunch together. 

This afternoon, we'll head to Masiphumelele, where we’ll visit Mama Yandi’s Township Uplifting Project and see how creativity, plastic art, and entrepreneurship are creating new opportunities in the community. We’ll continue to the Masi Creative Hub to experience their Kitchen & Garden Project and gain a deeper understanding of the grassroots initiatives making a meaningful difference here.

Our day wraps up at Harbor House V&A Waterfront, where we’ve made dinner reservations for a meal overlooking one of Cape Town’s most beautiful coastal settings as we toast to our first full day together. 

After breakfast, we’ll spend the morning getting to know Cape Town through one of its most delicious storytellers: food. Our private culinary tour will lead us through the city’s vibrant streets on foot, pairing carefully chosen local flavors with the history, culture, and characters that have shaped this remarkable place. 

Along the way, we’ll meet local people and sample dishes before heading up Table Mountain with Fast Track tickets for sweeping views across the city, coastline, and beyond.

By afternoon, we’ll leave the buzz of the city behind and travel into the Cape Winelands, where the scenery gradually gives way to rolling vineyards and mountain-framed landscapes. Our destination is Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa, a gracious country retreat surrounded by the beauty of the Franschhoek Valley. With its elegant rooms, peaceful gardens, and inviting spa, it’s the perfect place to slow our pace and settle into the next chapter of our South African adventure.

Tonight, we’ll dine close to home at Sauvage, the hotel’s sophisticated restaurant, where seasonal ingredients and contemporary cuisine celebrate the bounty of the surrounding Winelands. We’ll raise a glass to our first taste of Franschhoek, savoring a relaxed evening in one of South Africa’s most beautiful wine regions.

We’ll ease into another beautiful morning in the Cape Winelands before heading out for a full day of wine, scenery, and small-town charm. 

Our first stop is Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s oldest towns, where we’ll wander beneath oak-lined streets, admire the graceful Cape Dutch architecture, and have time to browse its boutiques and galleries at our own pace. 

From here, we’ll venture deeper into wine country, arriving at Waterford Wine Estate for a tasting and a leisurely lunch at Salt, where fresh, seasonal flavors make the most of the estate’s beautiful surroundings.

Our afternoon continues with a second tasting at either Kleinood Farm or La Motte, depending on availability. Each offers its own perspective on the region’s celebrated wines, giving us another opportunity to linger over the glass and take in the magnificent landscapes.

Then it’s back to the hotel, where the rest of the afternoon belongs entirely to us. Later this evening, we’ll gather for dinner at La Pavillon, another one of the hotel’s elegant restaurants, for a delicious evening in Franschhoek.

We've had the pleasure of spending several delicious days among the vineyards and elegant estates of the Cape Winelands; so let's trade wine country for the wild. 

Following breakfast, we’ll bid farewell to Franschhoek and transfer to Cape Town International Airport, where we’ll board our flight to Port Elizabeth, the gateway to the Eastern Cape. As we leave the familiar landscapes behind, the scenery shifts dramatically from manicured vineyards to wide-open bushveld and untamed wilderness.

On arrival, a private transfer will carry us to the 5-star Bukela Game Lodge, tucked within the wildlife-rich Amakhala Game Reserve. Here, the pace and character of our adventure change completely. Our days will no longer revolve around tasting rooms and leisurely lunches, but around the thrill of spotting elephants, lions, giraffes, and other magnificent wildlife in their natural habitat. 

The lodge itself offers a peaceful, lavish base from which we'll explore the surrounding wilderness, with beautiful spaces perfectly designed for relaxing between adventures.

After settling into our rooms, we’ll have a little bit of free time before the real excitement begins. As the afternoon light starts to soften across the bush, we’ll head out on our first game drive, a chance to venture into the reserve and discover what might be waiting around the next bend. Keep those binoculars close; from here on out, anything can happen.

Let the sounds of the African bush gently wake you up as we begin to settle into the wonderfully unhurried tempo of safari life in the reserve. 

Our morning game drive takes us into the golden light of the Eastern Cape, a magical time for spotting wildlife. We’ll keep watch for elephant, lion, rhino, and buffalo, while giraffe browse among the trees, zebra and wildebeest move across the grasslands, and graceful antelope dart through the bush. With a little luck, we may even catch sight of an elusive leopard. Birdlife is abundant too, with colorful species adding their own flashes of movement and sound to the landscape.

After our morning adventure, we’ll return to the lodge for a beautifully prepared lunch featuring fresh local ingredients before enjoying some time at our leisure. 

Over today and tomorrow, we all have appointments at the lodge's spa for a relaxing massage. In the meantime, maybe you'll take a swim, relax with a book, or simply soak up the peaceful surroundings before heading out again for our afternoon game drive. As the heat begins to fade, the bush comes alive once more, offering another opportunity to spot animals and watch the landscape glow beneath the changing African light.

Back at the lodge, we’ll gather for a relaxed evening and enjoy a delicious meal as we share stories from the day’s adventures. With exceptional food, comfortable surroundings, and the thrill of game drives, today gives us the quintessential safari experience!

We’ll spend our final full day at Amakhala enjoying the freedom to settle into safari life at our own pace. Two game drives give us another chance to spot the reserve’s remarkable wildlife, while time between outings lets us enjoy Bukela’s beautiful spaces—from its inviting lounge and dining areas to the swimming pool and peaceful outdoor spots overlooking the bush. It’s a lovely day to linger and recharge.

Amakhala is home to an impressive diversity of Eastern Cape wildlife, and there’s always something new to notice. Beyond the Big Five, we may encounter giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, kudu, impala, and an abundance of birdlife. We’ll also learn more about the conservation efforts protecting these animals and restoring the region’s natural habitats, giving us a deeper appreciation for the remarkable landscape we’ve been exploring.

Our final evening brings one more delicious lodge dinner and the chance to swap favorite sightings and safari stories. As the sun disappears over the reserve, we’ll savor those last golden moments in the bush—perhaps with a drink in hand and the realization that safari has a way of staying with us long after we leave.

Today marks the official end of our South Africa adventure. After breakfast, we’ll bid farewell to the Eastern Cape bush and transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ) for onward travel.

For guests returning home, our core trip ends here. The Port Elizabeth–Johannesburg domestic flight is not included in the trip cost, as we recommend booking it as part of your international ticket whenever possible. Doing so can make the connection easier, allow luggage to be checked through, and provide greater protection if a delay affects the onward international itinerary.

For those continuing to the KwaZulu-Natal extension, there’s no goodbye just yet! We’ll take a flight to Durban, where our next chapter begins along South Africa’s spectacular Indian Ocean coast. Onward!

Once we touch down in Durban, our private transfer will take us to The Capital Zimbali Resort, a sophisticated seaside retreat tucked into the lush Zimbali coastal estate. 

Where coastal forest meets the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Zimbali is a beautiful corner of KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast. Golden beaches, tropical greenery, and sweeping ocean views create an idyllic backdrop for a short respite between our safari adventures.

We'll settle into our sea-facing rooms, gather for dinner at the resort, and raise a glass to the adventures still ahead.

After breakfast, we’ll leave Zimbali behind and travel inland toward the renowned Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. As the coastline gives way to the rolling hills and open grasslands of Zululand, we’ll enter one of South Africa’s most important wildlife sanctuaries—and one with an extraordinary conservation legacy. The reserve played a pivotal role in bringing the southern white rhino back from the brink of extinction through its pioneering Operation Rhino program, which began in the 1960s.

Our home here, Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, overlooks the park and places us in the midst of this extraordinary wilderness. We’ll settle into our private villas, take in the expansive views, and enjoy the lodge’s thoughtful blend of contemporary luxury and African-inspired design. 

Later today, we’ll have our first opportunity to explore the reserve on a game drive, where sightings can include rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and an impressive variety of antelope and birdlife.

We’ll ease into the day with coffee and sweeping views across the park before heading out on a morning game drive. This reserve is particularly renowned for its rhino population, so we’ll keep our eyes open for both white and black rhino, along with elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, zebra, and perhaps some of the park’s more elusive residents. 

Back at the lodge, lunch and an afternoon at leisure give us time to enjoy the property itself. Perhaps you'll cool off in the pool, settle into a comfortable spot overlooking the reserve, or savor the serenity of the bush. 

Later, we’ll head out again for an afternoon game drive, when changing light and cooler temperatures can bring new wildlife activity.

Our evening wraps up back at the lodge with dinner and another opportunity to share the day’s sightings. With the reserve stretching out below us and the sounds of wildlife beyond the lodge, it’s a memorable final taste of Zululand before our next adventure.

We'll wave goodbye to Rhino Ridge this morning and travel toward the spectacular coastline of northern KwaZulu-Natal, where the landscape transforms from rolling bushveld to a wild meeting of forest, wetlands, and sea. 

A 3-hour drive brings us to Librodi Lodge, where we’ll switch to a 4x4 for the final leg to our home tonight: Thonga Beach Lodge, tucked within the extraordinary iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

This protected coastal wilderness is one of South Africa’s most remarkable natural treasures, stretching along the Indian Ocean with pristine beaches, lush dune forests, freshwater lakes, and abundant wildlife. iSimangaliso, meaning “miracle” or “wonder” in isiZulu, is South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its remote coastline provides a spectacular setting for our next few days.

Once we arrive, we’ll settle into our rooms and have the remainder of the day to enjoy this secluded corner of the coast. With the beach, forest, and surrounding wilderness right outside our door, it’s a heavenly setting for our final chapter in South Africa.

The day is ours to explore the extraordinary coastal wilderness surrounding the lodge. Depending on the weather and what catches our interest, we might kayak across Lake Sibaya, snorkel in the warm Indian Ocean, join a guided walk along the beach or through the coastal forest, or venture out for sundowners on the lake. We could also visit a nearby community to learn more about life along this remote stretch of KwaZulu-Natal.

Between adventures, we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the lodge itself—perhaps stretching out beside the pool, wandering down to the beach, or keeping watch for whales offshore. The food is another highlight, with the kitchen creating fresh, flavorful meals inspired by the region and the bounty of the surrounding coast.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll gather together for dinner, sharing stories from our adventures and enjoying a delicious meal as the sun dips below the horizon. With the beauty of iSimangaliso all around us, it’s a wonderful way to savor our final day on the South African coast.

We’ll start our last morning by the Indian Ocean, then check out and ride the lodge’s 4x4 through the coastal wilderness to reach our private transfer to King Shaka International Airport in Durban. Here, our South African adventure officially comes to an end.

For the easiest onward journey to the United States, we recommend booking a flight from Durban, with a departure time no earlier than 3 pm, through a major international hub. Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport) generally offers the widest selection of international connections and is our recommended option for those seeking the most flexibility.
