The trip officially starts the afternoon of August 31st, but if you’re traveling across an ocean to get to Rwanda you may want to consider arriving a day or two early, so you have time to relax and adjust to the local time zone. If you do decide to arrive early, just let us know and we’ll help you with arrangements.
You should fly into the Kigali International Airport (KGL).
Yes, airport transfers are included upon arrival and departure within the dates of the trip. If you choose to come a day early or leave a day late you are responsible for your own transportation.
We will have a Zoom call about 6 weeks before the trip starts to discuss all that information and give you a packing list. Here is a great website that we love that will help you with packing and travel trips.
In the month of September, the maximum temperature is 75°F and the minimum 50°F.
Easy to moderate. All of our trips include some walking so you need to be able to walk 3-5 miles a day at a normal pace and at be able to sustain your walking speed. People have joined our tours from 21-88, and we don't do anything extreme, but if you have bad knees or back, or walk with a cane, you need to speak to us first to see if this trip is right for you. At times, you'll need to be able to walk on uneven ground, such as cobblestone, and to go up and down stairs unassisted. You also need to be able to handle your own suitcase.
Note: The chimpanzee and gorilla safaris are not easy. If you have any injuries or issues you feel worried about, you can hire a porter to carry you up on a palanquin, which isn't dissimilar to a stretcher and is very comfortable. It comes at an additional cost. If you are in reasonable shape, you can make both of these treks. However, getting in good shape and being able to walk up hills and at elevation is something you should train for. The ground, particularly for the gorillas, is not necessarily a path; the guides will be bushwhacking our way through the bamboo forest at times, so good shoes with traction are necessary. On our pre-trip call, we will go into this in more detail.
Travelers from the U.S. can obtain a 30-day Rwandan tourist visa at the Kigali airport for $50. Credit cards are generally accepted at the Kigali International Airport, but the U.S. Embassy recommends that travelers arrive at the Kigali International Airport with sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for the visa in case credit card transactions are not possible at the time of your arrival.
