Derby Days in Kentucky

Arrive in Louisville midday and make your own way to The Bellwether, a stylish boutique hotel in the city’s historic Highlands neighborhood. Set in beautifully restored early-20th-century buildings, the hotel blends original architectural character with Art Deco-inspired details and modern comforts, giving us an intimate, distinctly Louisville home base for our Derby adventure. 

Once we’ve settled in, early arrivals can get their first taste of the city by wandering through the nearby botanical gardens, visiting the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, or exploring the Muhammad Ali Center, which celebrates the extraordinary life and legacy of one of Louisville’s most famous sons.

Around 6 pm, we’ll gather at Neat Bourbon Bar for a welcome drink and our official introductions to the group and our trip leader. It’s a lovely chance to meet our fellow travelers, settle in, and start getting excited for the days ahead before heading out for our first dinner together.

We’ll make our way to Decade in Louisville’s lively Butchertown neighborhood. This contemporary restaurant puts a creative spin on American cooking, with a seasonal menu featuring handmade pasta, fresh vegetables, seafood, and beautifully prepared meats. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect place to linger over dinner, raise a glass, and begin our Kentucky Derby adventure together.

We’ll begin the morning with breakfast at Highland Morning, a beloved local favorite known for its generously portioned Southern-style cooking. Over coffee, pancakes, eggs, or a plate of biscuits and gravy, we’ll ease into the day before heading out to explore one of Louisville’s most iconic neighborhoods.

We’ll join a private guided tour of Old Louisville, where grand Victorian homes line leafy streets and offer a glimpse into the city’s Gilded Age. Our guide will bring the neighborhood’s history to life before we step inside the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, one of Louisville’s most impressive historic mansions. We’ll admire its elaborate interiors and learn about the prominent family who once called this extraordinary home theirs. 

Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch at Buck’s, an elegant Louisville eatery where classic American and Southern flavors shine on a menu of crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, seafood, steaks, and the quintessential Kentucky Hot Brown.

Take some free time to browse downtown boutiques or return to the hotel for some downtime before our evening plans. Around 5 pm, we’ll get into the Derby spirit with a hands-on hat workshop at Atelier Formé Millinery Co. Each of us will start with a premade hat and learn how to personalize it with feathers, flowers, ribbons, horsehair, and other embellishments. 

We’ll round out the evening with an exceptional five-course dinner at 610 Magnolia back in Old Louisville. Chef Edward Lee’s cuisine brings a contemporary perspective to Kentucky and Southern cooking, drawing on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and modern techniques. In the restaurant’s intimate historic setting, we’ll enjoy a changing tasting menu paired with carefully selected wines.

A leisurely breakfast at Wiltshire Pantry offers us an easy start to a very exciting day. This longtime Louisville favorite is beloved for its freshly brewed coffee, welcoming neighborhood feel, and hearty breakfast offerings.

By 10:30 am, it’s time to put on our finest pink race-day attire and head to Churchill Downs for Kentucky Oaks Day, the glamorous Friday celebration that precedes the Kentucky Derby. The Oaks is dedicated to three-year-old fillies and is famously awash in pink in support of breast cancer awareness. 

With our new hats or fascinators in place, we’ll take a peek at the pageantry of the paddock, cheer on the horses, and soak up the excitement as the afternoon races unfold. 

Between races, we can enjoy classic Kentucky cocktails, including the iconic Mint Julep and the Oaks’ signature Lily cocktail. A buffet lunch and early dinner are included, so we can stay immersed in the action without having to leave Churchill Downs.

The festivities continue into the evening with the Fillies and Lillies party at the museum, a lively Derby-week celebration featuring live entertainment, fashion, cocktails, and plenty of Oaks Day glamour. The evening’s highlight arrives around 8:40 pm with the running of the Kentucky Oaks, giving us one final thrilling race before the Derby takes center stage the following day.

Today is the day we’ve been anxiously waiting for! After brunch at M. Peppers, our hotel's chic restaurant, we’ll have ample time to get dressed in our most elegant race-day attire and, naturally, our most spectacular hats or fascinators. Then it’s off to Churchill Downs for a full day of Kentucky Derby tradition, fashion, and excitement.

For the rest of the day, we’ll take in the spectacle of Derby Day, with opportunities to explore the historic grounds, visit the paddock, see the horses up close, and watch the afternoon races unfold. There’s something wonderfully theatrical about the entire experience, from the impeccably dressed crowds to the anticipation building with each race. 

A buffet lunch and early dinner are included, so we can stay in the heart of the action all day. Then comes the main event: as the horses take their places and the crowd joins in for “My Old Kentucky Home,” we’ll watch the Kentucky Derby itself—the legendary “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.”

After a day of grand hats, racing, and Derby glamour, we’ll trade our finery for something comfortable and head back to the hotel's own M. Peppers for light nibbles to round out the evening. 

We've packed light breakfast boxes for everyone this morning, in case you need a little pick-me-up as we get on the road to explore the Bluegrass Region today.

Our first stop after breakfast is Mill Ridge Farm, where we’ll get an insider’s look at one of Kentucky’s most respected Thoroughbred operations. The farm's owner will lead the tour and introduce us to its stallions, mares, foals, and retired broodmares, with the chance to get close to the horses and even feed them a few carrots. 

Afterward, we’ll enjoy brunch at Holly Hill Inn, tucked into the Bluegrass region and celebrated for its warm hospitality and seasonal, farm-driven cooking. 

Our afternoon continues at the Henry Clay Estate, where the Women’s Voices tour brings the stories of the women connected to the historic Ashland estate to the forefront, offering a fascinating look at family life and society in 19th-century Kentucky.

By mid-afternoon, we’ll turn our attention to another Kentucky tradition: bourbon. Dark Arts Whiskey House will host an exclusive Thief from the Barrel experience for our group. Rather than simply tasting from a bottle, we’ll sample four whiskeys directly from resting barrels, using a traditional whiskey thief under the guidance of a knowledgeable Spirit Guide, before choosing our favorite bottle to take home.

Dinner at Blue Heron Steak House brings our time together to a delicious close, as we raise a toast to new friendships and the magic of the Derby.

Our final morning begins with breakfast at La Pâtisserie Française, a charming Louisville spot that brings a little French café culture to the city. We’ll linger over freshly baked pastries, coffee, and French-inspired breakfast favorites before making the most of our remaining time in Louisville.

Depending on your departure time, there’s time for one last stroll through one of the city’s historic neighborhoods, a bit of boutique shopping, or simply returning to your favorite café for one final cup of coffee. 

After checking out of the hotel, we’ll make our own way by taxi to the airport for our flights home.

As we leave Kentucky, we’ll take with us memories of stately historic homes, Thoroughbred horses, gracious Southern hospitality, bourbon country, wonderful meals, and the extraordinary spectacle of the Kentucky Derby. It’s been a special few days!
