At the heart of Recoleta---and Buenos Aires---- is the Alvear Palace Hotel, the most exclusive address in BA and one of the top hotels in the world. The 75-year-old grand dame is privately owned anything but chain hotel. It's a a magnificent gilded confection of marble and bronze, filled with Empire and Louis XV styled furnishings in its public rooms and tasteful French fabrics in its guest rooms where beds are laid with monogrammed Egyptian cottons and down filled pillows.
Long a meeting place for locals for drinks, coffee, high tea and dinner, the Alvear has housed an illustrious list of luminaries.
Its guest register is filled with royalty, emperors and emirs including His and Her Excellency the Emperor and Empress of Japan, His and Her Majesty the King and Queen of Spain, and His Royal Highness Prince Charles of Wales.
And from the world of art, cinema, sports and music, Subin Mehta, Arthur Miller, Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Deneuve, Salma Hayek, Sharon stone, Sofia Loren, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Donatella Versace, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Tommy Lee Jones, Matt Damon, Vittorio Mastroiani and Paloma Piccaso have all stayed here.
The hotel personifies grand from its entrance filled flags from around the world fluttering in the breeze to its morning coat and top hat outfitted doorman to its housekeeping staff clad in classic French maid uniforms of black and white. Its staff to guest ratio is impressive: 550 professionals, 210 guest rooms.
We found it to be the most spectacular place to stay in a city rife with fabulous offerings. The breakfast buffet is fabulous. Don't miss the freshly squeezed tangerine juice.
